Every year, New Jersey Dance Theatre Ensemble supports dance students that face financial challenges in striving for their goals through the The Alfredo Corvino Scholarship Fund, named for NJDTE’s Founding Artistic Director. As part of that endeavor, NJDTE hosted a benefit performance event on Sunday, June 11, 2017 to raise funds specifically for our scholarship dancers. With your support, we can achieve our goal of raising the $7,500 in additional funds needed to support talented dancers with financial challenges this season.

Dancers on scholarship receive extensive technique classes, performance opportunities, and the mentorship and support they need to achieve their dreams. These scholarships are essential in preparing students to purse dance in higher education and lead fulfilling and contributive lives.

All tax-deductible contributions to the Alfredo Corvino Scholarship Fund are gratefully accepted year-round. Please contact Christina Amundson, Development & Operations at camundson@njdte.org for more information on directed giving and general contributions to NJDTE.

NJDTE Scholarship Recipients

NJDTE alumnus Darwin Black attended his first NJDTE summer on full scholarship at age 15. He went on to train at the Ailey School and dance professionally with Sacramento Ballet. Now in his third season with TU dance in St. Paul, MN, he is shaping his new community by teaching inner city youth at the company’s school. He speaks about his childhood and growing up in Newark:

“NJDTE gave me an outlet and a healthy, safe place to go on the weekends. Getting up early on Sundays was a thrill and the best part of my week. I saw possibilities and new opportunities for myself. It was a doorway to a different world than the one I grew up in.” – Darwin Black

Your commitment to the performing arts and your generosity are major factors in the continuing success of NJDTE. Together, we make a difference by creating a nurturing and inspiring program for the next generation of dance artists.
